City of Atlanta

Doctors’ Memorial Park

Atlanta, GA

Over the last two years, Lord Aeck Sargent has been working with the City of Atlanta Office of Park Design on community engagement, master planning, landscape design and construction documents for this new neighborhood park on Atlanta’s west side near the intersection of Fairburn Road and Benjamin E. Mays Drive.

The park’s creation was initiated by Atlanta Council-member C.T. Martin as a way to create  community gathering space serving for nearby senior housing, multifamily developments and users of nearby medical clinics.

The neighborhoods surrounding the forthcoming park – including Adamsville, Boulder Park, Collier Heights and Wilson Mill Meadows – were historically home to a range of prominent African-American doctors throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s. In addition to serving as trailblazing professionals in the medical field, these doctors also played important roles as civil rights leaders. The doctors’ leadership in both the local community and national movement are memorialized as part of a water feature in the park’s corner plaza.

Construction is scheduled to be complete in in 2017.
