Overview

Within the historic preservation studio we have a philosophy that a thorough understanding of an historic resource and its context is key to a successful project.  This understanding is generally developed during the preservation planning process when various streams of information converge to ultimately inform the design and construction phases of the project.

We have had the opportunity to apply these principles while working with our college and university clients who are stewards of a vast and significant collection of important historic resources.  Whether we are working with an individual structure or an entire college campus our dedicated and talented preservation professionals pride themselves in coming up with creative solutions that celebrate the significant elements of a resource while at the same time planning for its continued use.

Providing creative solutions for land-use, planning, residential and mixed-use architecture is increasingly a key tenant of urban design. This is also true for urban college and university campuses where it has become a critical component for attracting and retaining quality faculty and students.

Because institutions have limited resources, facilities improvements require a mix of new and innovative buildings, as well as the conversion of existing buildings into new uses, such as residential, retail, office and mixed-use occupancies.  For urban campuses, planning and architectural design that strengthens the relationship between the campus and its urban setting promotes a thriving campus community.

Working with designers who understand the fundamentals of urban planning, exhibit innovative design concepts, and maintain strong attention to detail is critical to the success of complex live-work-play projects.
