Terry Sargent, Lord Aeck Sargent Co-founder, Receives AIA Huron Valley Lifetime Achievement Award

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 21, 2013 – Terrance “Terry” Sargent, co-founder and design principal at architecture and planning firm Lord Aeck Sargent (LAS), has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Huron Valley chapter.

Sargent has been instrumental in developing LAS’ core mission and commitment to respond creatively to each project’s every detail and unique design challenges, which the firm refers to as “Responsive Design.” Recognizing that a large percentage of the firm’s clients are institutional as well as federal, state, county and municipal governments and that they need buildings to last into the 22nd century even as their functions change over time, Sargent and the firm’s architects create lasting structures with internal spaces that are flexible and incrementally adaptable to ongoing change.

With several decades of architectural experience in the design of education, historic preservation, healthcare, science and research projects, Sargent’s expertise has helped Lord Aeck Sargent earn more than 150 national, regional, state and local awards, among them two National AIA Honor Awards, three Progressive Architecture Design Awards and more than 30 regional and local AIA Design Awards.

Since opening LAS’ second of six nationwide offices here in Ann Arbor in 2001, Sargent has designed a number of significant, award-winning projects across the state. Some of these include the Mark Jefferson Science Building renovation and addition at Eastern Michigan University; upgrades and improvements to the landmark Reading Room in the University of Michigan’s William W. Cook Legal Research Building; the Cyclotron building addition at the University of Michigan Medical School; and the rehabilitation of Marshall-Adams Hall, one of the oldest buildings on the Michigan State University campus.

“Terry’s broad array of award-winning work has without a doubt earned him the distinction of this Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Tony Aeck, LAS co-founder and chairman. “We’re delighted that AIA Huron Valley has recognized his professional lifetime of practicing and creating architecture, and sharing his design aesthetic with the community.”

Sargent and fellow architect Larry Lord established Lord & Sargent in 1983. In 1989 the firm merged with long established (1942) Aeck Associates to form Lord, Aeck & Sargent Inc. (dba Lord Aeck Sargent).

Sargent is an active member of the AIA, for which he has served as a juror for numerous national, state and local awards competitions. He has also lectured on college and university campuses, and his design work has been showcased at exhibitions across the country.

Sargent attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a master’s degree in urban planning along with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. This education combination taught him to design signature buildings to complement surrounding structures and their respective physical settings.
