Red Mile Development

Red Mile Town Green

Lexington, KY

The Red Mile Development Plan is a progressive infill development project located in the heart of Lexington, at the nation’s second oldest standing chariot racing venue.

The so-called “Red Mile” is a 138-acre plot of land surrounded by mid-high density residential development and light-heavy industrial land use. Since 2006, Lord Aeck Sargent has acted as a strategic advisor and design lead for the creation of the future development program. Conceptual plans capitalize on 62 acres of the site’s prime land fronting Red Mile Road, proposing nearly 300,000 square feet of commercial space, about 200 residential units and an estimated 50,000 square feet of office space.

The centerpiece to all of these future uses is the “town green,” a linear green space flanking two key streets connecting the historic venue to Red Mile road.  As an outgrowth of the larger Red Mile Development Plan effort, LAS was retained to create a more detailed design program for the signature park and gathering area.  The resulting concept plans include a wide array of active and passive pedestrian amenities, including multi-use lawn spaces, public art, water features, a variety of shade structures and event-oriented hardscape plaza spaces.
