James LeVoy Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Building
Prior to designing the facility, Lord Aeck Sargent master planned the new Biomolecular Technology Research and Innovation precinct on the University of Utah Campus in Salt Lake City. The multi-building facility consists of laboratory research space, supporting core facilities, faculty office space, symposium and conference space, as well as interior and exterior public areas designed to encourage maximum interaction of faculty from diverse disciplines.
The precinct was designed to include a shared service and a shared multi-species Vivarium core and a Nanofabrication core that was included in the initial constructed facility.
The plan seeks to celebrate the essence of the rich program and the stunning site, with buildings placed to take advantage of mountain views. Careful attention has been paid to the experience of both the researchers and visitors to the building and site. A “canyon” public walk sequence moves through the initial facility, punctuated by public are and a shared café space that cuts diagonally across the site linking adjoining campus precincts.
