New Student Housing

Orangeburg, SC

Lord Aeck Sargent worked with Claflin University to create a new student housing complex with state-of-the-art amenities aimed at offering an enhanced student-life experience to attract future applicants.

The building houses 200 beds with a mix of four-bedroom suites and two-bedroom semi-suites, with two staff apartments in each wing. Each wing contains a study lounge, a computer lab and a laundry room, as well as small informal study nooks at the building corners. The connector includes an open lobby lounge, an office, reception desk, meeting room and two large fitness rooms.

The building employs natural daylighting, water-source heat pumps with energy recovery units and domestic hot water heat exchangers, and efficient lighting and plumbing fixtures to reduce energy and water consumption.

The building serves as a gateway to the campus and completes a quadrangle with existing residence halls, providing strong connections between indoor and outdoor amenity spaces.

The design-build project was completed in collaboration with H.J. Russell & Company.
