Through the sharing of its science spaces with the community, the New School of Science & Engineering creates a “state-of-the-science” space in which teams of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians work fluidly in a highly interdisciplinary manner.

The complex accommodates learning spaces that have undergraduate research embedded into the more formal research programs, as well as the discovery- and active-learning based pedagogy that is found in the coursework at all levels. This requires flexible laboratory and classroom design so that instrumentation and courseware can be changed as technologies advance and program needs change.

The project consolidated activities from the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics and Physics. With its new floor plan it accommodated learning spaces that have undergraduate research embedded into the more formal research programs.

The project included a host of cost effective, state-of-the-shelf sustainable design strategies including daylight harvesting, external solar control, water-efficient plumbing fixtures, natural stormwater man­agement and low-emitting finishes. A demonstration-scale photovoltaic array and an evacuated tube solar hot water system were also under incorporated. Lord Aeck Sargent managed the LEED Certification process, including energy modeling, for this project, which was awarded LEED Gold Certification.
